An elderly person was allegedly hacked to death at Baragudipada under Balikuda police limits in Jagatsinghpur district on Friday. The deceased has been identified as Prahallad Das.

As per sources, Prahallad was in his house when the accused Bana Das, a resident of Naradia village, visited him at around 1:30 pm today.
Soon a heated argument ensued between them over some issue. Later, Bana lost his cool and hacked Prahallad with a billhook to death.
When Bana was trying to flee from the crime spot,  local people overpowered him and handed him over to the police.

On being informed, Balikuda IIC along with his team reached the spot, rescued Bana from the clutches of irate people, and sent the body for postmortem. The cops also seized the weapon used in the crime.

While the actual reason behind the murder is yet to be ascertained, the villagers suspected that the quarrel over Bana leaving his pigs in Prahallad’s garden to graze might have led to the dispute and subsequent murder.

Meanwhile, a detailed investigation is underway, police said.
