Low pressure-induced untimely rain leaves Odisha farmers in lurch

The well-marked low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal is very much likely to intensify into a depression. Under the influence of the system, several regions in Odisha have already started witnessing rainfall activities.

However, the untimely rain has left farmers in Odisha in the lurch as they apprehend that their harvested paddy may get damaged due to the continuous rainfall. 

The unexpected change in the weather has triggered uncertainty among the farmers as they fear that they may incur financial losses if the rain continues.

“We have harvested paddy and piled them up in the backyard. The continuous rain has drenched all the produce. If it continues for a few more days, then the paddy will start sprouting,” said a farmer from Koraput said.

“The skies were clear when we harvested the paddy and suddenly it started raining. No one made us aware of the change in the weather conditions,” another farmer added.

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted the entire Odisha is very likely to witness rainfall activities tomorrow, while an alert for heavy rainfall has been issued for Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Ganjam and Gajapati.

As per the weather officer, Chikiti in Ganjam has received the highest rainfall of 36 mm in the last 24 hours followed by Paralakhemundi (12.8 mm), Kashinagar (12.6 mm), Nuagarh (11.8 mm).
