Lightning strike kills man and his son in Odisha’s Angul

A man and his son were killed by lightning strike in Kishorenagar, Angul. Heavy rains forced them to take shelter under a tree with others, when the lightning struck. Two others are hospitalised. IMD has forecasted that thunderstorm with lightning is very likely to occur during next three days.

A lightning strike tragically claimed the lives of a man and his son in Kishorenagar block of Angul district, on Tuesday.

The incident occurred as heavy rains lashed the locality, prompting four labourers to take refuge under a tree. Unfortunately, the lightning struck, resulting in the immediate demise of the father-son duo at the scene.

The two other individuals accompanying them were severely injured and were admitted to a hospital in Kishorenagar, where they are currently receiving medical treatment.

Worth mentioning, with a trough running from East Uttar Pradesh and adjoining Bihar to south Odisha across Chhattisgarh, India Meteorological Department (IMD) regional centre forecasted that thunderstorm with lightning is very likely to occur in the afternoon/evening hours at one or two places over the districts of Odisha, during next three days.

The IMD has issued Yellow Warning in some districts till 0830 hrs IST of May 16.

Weather forecast and warning for Wednesday

In its mid-day bulletin, the IMD said, “Thunderstorm with lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph is very likely to occur in the afternoon/evening hours at one or two places over the districts of Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, and Ganjam.”

“Thunderstorm with lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph is very likely to occur in the afternoon/evening hours at one or two places over the districts of Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Kandhamal, Bhadrak, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Bolangir, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, and Cuttack,” the IMD bulletin stated.

“Hot and humid conditions are very likely to prevail at one or two places over the districts of Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, and Gajapati,” the regional centre added.
