Daily wage labourer's body lies at home as family struggles for funds for funeral in Sambalpur

Surendra Munda's body lies at his home in Rairakhol, Sambalpur as his family struggles to fund his funeral after a fatal paddy-cutting accident. Appeals for government aid remain unanswered.

The body of a daily wage labourer has reportedly been kept lying at his house since Tuesday evening as his family struggled to arrange funds for his funeral. The heartwrenching incident has been reported from Rairakhol area in Sambalpur district.

The deceased, identified as Surendra Munda (27) of Chatuni village, was fatally injured while operating a paddy-cutting machine in Bansajal village.

Subsequently, he was first taken to Redhakhol hospital and later shifted to Burla Medical College after his condition deteriorated. However, he succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment at Burla.

After his body was brought home with help from locals, his family could not afford to arrange the last rites. Sources stated that the family also appealed to the government for financial help but has received no response.

“The owner of the factory only applied bandages for treatment of his injuries. I could see that his leg was also broken from the accident,” stated Rakesh Munda, brother of the deceased.

Meanwhile, the family and neighbours have been keeping vigil over the body, waiting for assistance. No comments from the district administration could be obtained over the matter.
