ASI team inspecting Sun Temple
A thorough inspection of the renowned Sun Temple at Konark was conducted by a 15-member team spearheaded by Janhwij Sharma, Additional Director General of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) on Saturday.
This investigation forms part of the preparatory measures to remove sand from the temple's inner sanctum, a task requiring meticulous precision.
The team included eminent members from the Sun Temple's core committee and technical committee along with retired archaeology professionals and academicians from the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) in Madras and Delhi.
During their inspection, they evaluated the temple's spire condition, mechanical devices installed for sand removal, and the condition of the temple’s foundation.
In his remarks post-inspection, ASI's Janhwij Sharma mentioned that the sand removal initiative is highly sensitive, and consultations with scientific experts are ongoing to ensure the process adheres to the highest standards.
“As you know it is a sensitive monument and a World heritage. So we have to make it sure that we carry out a detailed scientific study. So we have eminent scientists on our committee. After discussions with them, we will take the decision when we will remove the sand,” said Sharma.
“From the conservation point of view, the temple’s condition is good. There is no threat to it. We are inspecting how there will be structural stability after the removal of sand. There is sand inside it and soon it will be removed,” said DB Gadanayak, ASI Superintendent.
