Odisha’s Kargil martyr Gopinath Maharana
As the nation observes Kargil Vijay Diwas today, marking the victory of Indian forces over Pakistani intruders in 1999, Odisha remembers with pride and sorrow its first Kargil martyr, Shaheed Gopinath Maharana, who laid down his life at the tender age of 23.
Born in Janardanpur village under Nischintakoili block in Cuttack district, Gopinath Maharana joined the Indian Army at just 18 years of age. Serving as a driver in the 528 ASP Battalion, he was posted in the Kargil sector during the peak of the conflict.
On July 19, 1999, while transporting soldiers to the battlefront, his vehicle came under heavy enemy fire. Despite sustaining bullet injuries, Gopinath displayed extraordinary courage. Bleeding heavily, he continued driving, ensuring his comrades reached their destination safely before succumbing to his injuries. His act of valor saved many lives and earned him the eternal respect of a grateful nation.
Even after 25 years, the pain of loss has not faded for his mother, Jhumuri Maharana. Every day, she visits the Shaheed Memorial in the village, where a full-sized statue of her son stands. She gently wipes the statue with the end of her saree and silently recalls her memories with tear-filled eyes.
His sisters too frequently visit the memorial, reliving the memories of their beloved brother. The family continues to bear the emotional weight of his sacrifice, finding solace only in the nation’s pride for their son.
Villagers have long been urging the administration to honor the martyr’s legacy by naming a road in Salepur after him. They have also appealed for steps to preserve the memorial and promote awareness of Gopinath’s bravery among future generations.
“Shaheed Gopinath Maharana is not just the pride of our village but of the entire state. The sacrifice he made must never be forgotten,” said Pramod Behera, a local resident.
“The government must take immediate steps to ensure the martyr's memory is preserved with dignity,” added Abhaya Jena, another villager.
Though Gopinath Maharana is no longer physically present, his heroic deeds continue to inspire the nation. His sacrifice, made in the blood-soaked hills of Kargil, stands as a symbol of unmatched courage and devotion to duty.
On this Kargil Vijay Diwas, Odisha salutes its son, a warrior who gave his all so that others could live in freedom.
