Kamakhya Express mishap in Odisha: CRS to conduct detailed probe; ECoR announces compensation

The derailment of Kamakhya Express prompted an official probe by the Commission of Railway Safety (CRS). The CRS will conduct a detailed probe, official sources said on Sunday. The investigation, commissioned by the Ministry of Railways, will look into the factors leading to the accident. Meanwhile, East Coast Railway (ECoR) has announced compensation.

The ECoR confirmed that the derailment resulted in the death of an individual, with another suffering severe injuries and two more persons sustaining minor injuries.

ECoR accorded compensation for those affected by the Kamakhya Express train derailment. The deceased’s next of kin will receive Rs 5 lakh; critically injured passenger will receive Rs 2.5 lakh; while those two with minor injuries will be given Rs 50,000 each.

Efforts are being made to restore the railway track affected by the derailment. Railway officials are working at a rapid pace to resume normal train services on the down line. As a result of the damage, several wheels from the 11 derailed coaches are in need of replacement. The removal of all the coaches from the track has been completed, and repair work is underway.

To facilitate these operations, overhead electrical equipment has been temporarily switched off. The ECoR aims to have train operations back to normal by tomorrow morning. Notably, in light of the Kamakhya Express derailment, modifications have been made to the routes of 12 trains, including Puri-Durg, Puri-Howrah, Puri-New Delhi, Puri-Santragachi, and Visakhapatnam-Tata Express trains.
