Kamakhya Express derails in Odisha
Eleven coaches of the Bengaluru- Kamakhya Express derailed near the Nirgundi railway station in Cuttack’s Choudwar on Sunday. The incident occurred at around 11:54 AM when the train was passing through the station.
In response to the derailment, Indian Railways has diverted a few key trains.
Following the derailment, these trains have been diverted:
Senior railway officials and rescue teams have reached the spot. East Coast Railway (ECoR) officials confirmed that a special accident relief train has been sent to assist in clearing the tracks and ensuring the safety of stranded passengers.
ECoR Chief Public Relations Officer (PRO) Ashok Mishra stated, “Our priority is to restore normalcy and ensure passengers reach their destinations safely. Water, snacks, and other emergency provisions are being arranged.”
The exact cause of the derailment remains unclear. While there were reports of a possible track issue, railway authorities have yet to confirm this. “It is too early to determine the cause. Efforts are being made on a war footing to resume train services,” Mishra added.
Many passengers left the train on their own to find alternative transport. A passenger traveling to Assam said, “We were returning from Puri when the train suddenly slowed and we heard a loud noise. Thankfully, no major injuries occurred.”
Another passenger expressed concerns about the lack of immediate relief, saying, “We have been waiting for over an hour in the heat without water.”
Authorities are working to restore train operations and provide necessary assistance to affected passengers. Further updates are awaited.
