Jajpur, Bhadrak villagers in limbo over incomplete bridge projects
Construction delays in Odisha are leaving rural communities disconnected, as incomplete bridge projects stand as symbols of administrative neglect.
As per reports, the bridge in Jajpur’s Rasulpur block remains unfinished nine years after construction began, affecting as many as ten panchayats in the area. This bridge, intended over the Brahmani river near Brahmabarada, was initiated in 2016 with an allocated budget of Rs 10.42 crore. Though a target was set for its completion by 2018, it is yet to be completed.
Despite resolving land acquisition issues, construction on this vital infrastructure has stalled. As a result, residents are forced to cross the river using temporary roads or boats, especially vulnerable during the monsoon when these journeys can become perilous.
Community Struggles
The residents of ten panchayats in Rasulpur block face daily hardships. Simple tasks like attending school or accessing markets and banks become significant challenges due to the lack of a permanent bridge. Past incidents of boat capsizes have added to their concerns, yet pleas for assistance remain largely ignored.
“We are facing lots of problems due to the absence of a bridge. We request the administration to complete the work soon,” said Nakula Nayak, a local resident.
In a parallel situation, the Arjun bridge in Bhadrak district over the Salandi river also remains incomplete, with work suspended for over five years. Encroachments blocking road development on either side of the bridge have reportedly thwarted its usefulness.
Despite identifying the encroachers, local authorities have yet to clear the area. The District Collector has reportedly reassured residents that obstacles will soon be removed to expedite the bridge’s completion. The urgent need for functional infrastructure is a persistent demand from these communities.

“Necessary measures will be taken and the bridge work will be expedited soon,” said Bhadrak Collector Dilip Routray.
Accountability questioned
Attempts to contact local officials about these delays have not been met with responses, suggesting a reluctance to engage on the issue publicly. Residents are demanding action and accountability to ensure the improvement of road communication in their daily lives.
