A woman got a new lease of life after she sustained severe injuries during a boat ride along the Mahanadi river on Friday, thanks to the timely intervention of an Indian Navy personnel in Odisha’s Cuttack district.

According to The New Indian Express, Nandini Das, 25, had been for a boat ride with her friends. She suffered severe head injuries after two speedboats collided head-on during the ride.

Reportedly, the incident happened just 1km from the Bali Yatra ground. The propeller of one of the boat engines struck her during the crash, leaving her critically injured. Lucky for her, a diving team from the Indian Navy was conducting a reconnaissance mission on the Mahanadi and immediately came to her rescue.

As the ambulance was delayed, they carried her for almost 1km to an auto-rickshaw from where she was rushed to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack, where she received emergency treatment. Hospital authorities praised the swift action of the Navy personnel, stating that their timely action averted a potential critical situation.

Nandita is currently undergoing treatment in the Emergency ward. On being informed, local police later alerted her family members who later rushed to the hospital.

“Team members jumped to the rescue of the woman, who was bleeding profusely, and took her ashore. They ran nearly one kilometer carrying her on their shoulders and brought her to the nearest police aid post,” The New Indian Express quoted Navy sources.

Her condition is normalizing after getting treatment. She is out of danger, medical sources said.
