Hyena injured in bait bomb in Odisha’s Subarnapur

Hyena injured in bait bomb in Subarnapur

A hyena was left critically injured in a bait bomb set for wild boar hunting in the Bishnupur forest under Ulunda range of the Subarnapur district.

According to reports, locals spotted the hyena in a severely injured condition inside the forest and immediately informed the Forest Department. Ulunda forest officials rushed to the spot, rescued the injured hyena, and admitted it to the Ulunda veterinary hospital for treatment.

Sources said poachers had laid the bait bomb to hunt wild boars. Unfortunately, the hyena came in contact with the bomb, resulting in severe injuries to its mouth.

The incident has raised serious concerns about the safety of wildlife in the region.

Earlier last year, the Odisha Forest Department of the Odisha government had come up with an ambitious project to rope in sniffer dogs to guard forests, sanctuaries, and protect wildlife against poachers and other imminent threats.

The department had informed that sniffer dogs would be helpful in detecting bait bombs laid to poach wild animals.

According to the department, apart from bait bombs, the sniffer dogs would also be helpful in detecting snare traps laid by poachers to hunt.
