Hundreds of women gherao excise officials to save liquor smuggler in Odisha village
In a surprising turn of events, hundreds of women in Patisunapur village, Ganjam district, Odisha, gheraoed excise officials to protect a liquor smuggler. Known for opposing liquor sales, the women blocked the officers' vehicle during the arrest.
Local police later intervened to release the detained officials. The unusual incident has been reported from Patisunapur village under Sunapur Marine police limits in Ganjam district.
According to sources, a man illegally used to prepare and sell country liquor in the area. On getting information from reliable sources, a team from the excise department reached the village and arrested the accused.
However, hundreds of women from the village came to his rescue and blocked the vehicle. The women were adamant about setting the accused free for bizarre reasons. The officials were detained for hours as the women refused to let go of their vehicle.
The local police had to rush to the village after learning about the incident. The excise officials were released only after local police officials reached the spot.
