Health concerns emerge as dead snake found in water tank in Odisha

A health scare erupted in Ganjam district after a dead snake was discovered in a community water tank, contaminating hundreds of liters of water.

The incident took place in the Sahasapur Panchayat, located within the Sanakhemundi block of Ganjam.

The situation came to light when residents noticed a persistent foul smell from their tap water. After multiple complaints surfaced, an inspection was done to narrow down the cause of the smell. As soon as the water tank was opened and checked, a snake carcass was found floating in it.

Following this discovery, panic gripped residents of the village as well as those who relied on the tank for their daily water supply.

Incidentally, this tank, situated atop Hatapada hill, serves as the primary water source for the villagers of Sahasapur, Hatapada, and Jalmara.

Following this alarming discovery, villagers have demanded the Rural Water Supply Department conduct an immediate cleaning and purification of the water tank. With a capacity of 1 lakh liters, a large volume of contaminated water now needs to be drained out.

Questions regarding the health and hygiene of the affected communities have been voiced even as many wondered how the snake entered the water tank.

It is believed that the snake might have crept into the tank from a narrow crack somewhere on its body. While no concrete evidence has been found yet, the scare of water-borne diseases has gripped locals.
