Headmaster suspended for attending school drunk, repeatedly neglecting duties in Odisha
A headmaster in Mayurbhanj district has been suspended after repeated complaints of reporting to duty in an intoxicated state and neglecting his responsibilities. The suspended official has been identified as Sanjay Kumar Jena, headmaster of Dhanpota Primary School under the Badasahi block.
According to sources, Jena had allegedly developed a habit of consuming alcohol during school hours and was frequently seen in an inebriated state on the premises. He was also absent on most working days, causing major disruption to classes and adversely affecting students' education.
After receiving multiple complaints from villagers and school staff, the Badasahi Block Education Officer (BEO) issued a show-cause notice to Jena. Officials confirmed that his reply was unsatisfactory, leading to his immediate suspension.
Taking the matter seriously, the BEO launched an inquiry into the allegations, which confirmed the charges of misconduct. Based on the findings, disciplinary action was initiated, and Jena was formally suspended from service.
Education officials have termed the move a warning against indiscipline and negligence by teachers, stressing that schools must remain centres of learning and not be tarnished by such behaviour.

“He is an alcoholic. Despite repeated warnings, he used to come to school in an inebriated condition. He does not even maintain a school record. So we have suspended him,” said Madhusmita Giri, BEO, Badasahi.
