Unable to bear the harassment and blackmailing of the doctor and fellow staff, a nurse allegedly attempted to die by suicide by jumping before a speeding train in Odisha’s Bhadrak. The nurse engaged at Bhadrak District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) was rescued by the railway police and admitted to the local hospital.
Her condition is stated to be critical with severe injuries to her head, reports said. The victim nurse has been identified as Santoshi Mallick, wife of one Nikunja Mallick.
Quick Action Saves Life
According to sources, Santoshi had gone to the hospital on duty as usual. Unable to bear the blackmail and harassment, she left the hospital and reached the railway station around 16:00, thinking to throw herself in front of an approaching train. Witnesses say she sustained significant head injuries before she was discovered by the Railway Protection Force (RPF).
The RPF acted promptly, rescuing her from a potentially fatal situation and ensuring her immediate admission to Bhadrak District Headquarters Hospital.
Cultural and Social Context
“As usual, she had gone for her duty at around 2 PM. There, the matron harassed her and denied her access to the toilet. If she was a man, she could have gone to attend nature’s call somewhere outside. But, what will a woman do if she is denied access to a toilet when she herself is working in the hospital,” questioned the victim’s husband.
“This apart, they are also mentally torturing my wife and harassing and mocking her at work,” he added.
Lack of Official Commentary
Despite the gravity of the situation, neither hospital staff nor police officials have offered any comments regarding the allegations or the events that led to Santoshi's suicide attempt. No details have been provided, and the case remains shrouded in uncertainty as investigations continue.
