Unidentified miscreants broke into the Durga Temple at Darakhapatna in Cuttack City and decamped with valuables including jewellery.

As per reports, the stolen items include a silver crown of Goddess Durga, a gold crown, her gold jewellery, Mangalsutra, a golden eye and even the cash in the donation box.

The matter came to the fore when the priest reached the temple for morning ritual on Monday. He saw the lock of the temple gate broken and informed the police.

“When I came this morning, I saw the lock of the gate broken. I went inside and saw the donation box uprooted from its spot. Somebody took all the money in the donation box. Apart from that the almirah was also broken and the gold jewellery were missing from it,” said the priest, Jyotiranjan Tripathi.

“All the jewellery that the Goddess wears regularly and her special jewelleries that she wears during Dussehra have been stolen. I think the donation box had Rs 40,000-50,000 cash, which has been stolen too,” said a temple committee member Ranjit Kumar Jena.

On being informed, Madhupatna police reached the spot and launched an enquiry into the matter.

Footage from a nearby CCTV camera reveals two suspicious persons moving towards the temple late Sunday night.
