Four arrested in Sundargarh minor girl rape case

The Sundargarh Police arrested four persons including the prime accused in the sensational 2020 minor girl rape and alleged abortion attempt.

The accused have been identified as Bisra government hospital pharmacist Sanat Kumar Mohanty, owner of a private nursing home Sanjay Kumar Panda, Mahavir Mahato, his brother, and prime accused Sanjit Mahato.

While Sanjit Mahato was arrested on December 25, the other three accused were arrested yesterday.

As per reports, Sanjit had allegedly raped and impregnated his domestic help, a minor girl in Bisra, Sundargarh in 2020.

The family of the girl had filed a complaint at Bisra Police Station in connection with the incident.

Police investigation revealed that the minor girl got pregnant after the rape and was taken to a private nursing home by Sanjit, his brother Mahavir and the pharmacist Sanat to abort her pregnancy.

Sanjit had reportedly paid Rs 15,000 to the owner of the nursing home Sanjay Panda to abort the pregnancy. However, the pregnancy could not be aborted because it was too late for the same. But, when the girl delivered a baby, the nursing home owner and a doctor lied to her that she had delivered a stillborn child and allegedly stole the baby from her.

The doctor had kept the child's custody and police rescued the baby on December 17, 2023, and handed it over to the Childline officials.

Speaking about the case, Rourkela DSP, Nalita Modi said, “Sanjit Mahato has been forwarded to court for impregnating the minor girl. We have rescued the child and handed it over to the CWC.”

Further investigation is underway to nab the accused doctor who is absconding.
