Explosive-laden trucks seized under suspicious circumstances in Odisha's Rourkela

PUBLISHED: LAST UPDATE:

Suspicion and alarm grip Rourkela after two trucks loaded with explosives were found in a questionable condition near Balighat. It is said that more than eight tonnes of explosive materials were found in the two trucks. The incident raises fresh concerns just days after Maoists looted 4 tons of explosives from a nearby mining area.

Police probing into allegedly illegal transportation

Two trucks allegedly carrying large quantities of explosives under suspicious circumstances were seized near Balighat petrol pump under Raghunathpali police limits in Rourkela City of Odisha’s Sundargarh district on Sunday, intensifying tension in the region.

The seizure comes in the backdrop of a Maoist-related blast material heist just a few days ago in the district.

Over 8 tonnes of explosives found?

According to sources, more than eight tonnes of explosive materials were found in the two trucks. Local police, Mining department officials, and GST authorities have rushed to the site and began investigating the contents and origin of the trucks.

Preliminary reports suggest that both vehicles were carrying a huge cache of explosives, though no proper documentation or valid transport permits were found.

Authorities are now probing the source and intended destination of the explosive-laden trucks. Officials revealed that the paperwork for both vehicles was either missing or incorrect, raising concerns about the illegal transport or possible diversion to anti-social elements (Maoists).

The incident has drawn comparisons with Maoists recently looting 4 tonnes of explosives from Banko stone quarry under K. Balang police limits in Sundargarh. That incident, which occurred just five days ago, is yet to be fully resolved as around a tonne of the stolen explosives still remain untraced.

This latest development has only deepened the suspicions, and a high-level investigation is underway to determine whether the two cases are linked. Questions are being raised about how such a large quantity of explosives could be transported sans scrutiny.

No comments were received from the local police or district administration in this regard as a detailed probe is underway.
