Eviction sparks protest in Bhadrak, shopkeepers seek rehabilitation plan

Tension gripped Bhadrak on Tuesday as authorities attempted to evict shops built on government land along the Bhadrak Bypass to Sarkar Nagar road. Notices had been issued to shopkeepers warning them to vacate the premises.

When officials, including the Tahsildar and Sub-Divisional Officer, accompanied by a large force, arrived to carry out the eviction, the shopkeepers staged a protest. They held placards and raised slogans, refusing to vacate their shops.

The eviction process could not be completed for several hours, as discussions between the officials and the shopkeepers continued. Eventually, the authorities engaged with the traders at the bypass to negotiate, but the situation highlighted the growing tensions over the use of government land in the area.

As per the allegations of the vendors, though the eviction drive began in August 2024, no displaced has been rehabilitated.

“We welcomed the decision of eviction paving the way for the beautification of the city. The administration had also assured that to rehabilitate the displaced street vendors within six months. However, no step was taken even after one year,” alleged the local councillor.

“We strongly oppose the move. This is not right to evict us during rainy season and ahead of the festive season,” said a shopkeeper.

Officials have assured that further action will be taken in accordance with the law, but emphasized their aim to resolve the matter peacefully.
