In a tragic incident, a wild elephant trampled two children to death after dragging them out of their house in Kantapalli village under Bonai limits of Sundargarh district in Odisha early Sunday morning. Among the deceased, one child was 12 years old while the other was just 3 years old.

Sources reported that a wild tusker entered the premises of a house in the Mundasahi area of the village around dawn today. Upon spotting the jumbo, elder family members panicked and fled the spot but two girls, who were still sleeping, were reportedly left behind in the commotion.

Reports also added that after hearing the noise, the 12-year-old girl woke up and tried to run away but the intruder elephant grabbed her before she could escape. Subsequently, it trampled and killed her before handing out the same cruel fate to the 3-year-old.

Sources also mentioned that a herd of elephants was spotted roaming in the area before the incident and that a few other people had also suffered injuries in the attack.

Meanwhile, tension prevailed in the locality. However, police or the concerned forest authorities have not yet made any statement on the matter.

Notably, in January of this year, residents of Bonai staged a blockade on the Bonai-Jangla road disrupting communication on the route for hours after elephants had reportedly wreaked havoc in the area.
