‘Drunk driver’ runs over man, crashes truck into houses in Odisha’s Ganjam
A man was killed in a tragic road accident at Dhaugaon Chhak under Dharakot police limits in Ganjam district on Saturday. The victim, Basant Parida, died on the spot after being run over by a speeding truck while he was on his way to relieve himself.
According to reports, the truck driver, allegedly heavily intoxicated, continued driving recklessly after the fatal collision. The vehicle later rammed into two houses, causing extensive structural damage, and also damaged a nearby shop before coming to a halt.
Outraged villagers rushed to the spot and made desperate attempts to restrain the driver, who resisted. Reports suggest that the locals had to struggle for more than half an hour before finally managing to overpower him. They noted that the driver was visibly intoxicated, with his composure and the strong smell of alcohol on his breath confirming his condition.
The villagers eventually detained the accused and handed him over to the police. The incident has left the local community both shocked and aggrieved. With one life lost and damage caused to homes and a shop, residents have demanded strong action.
No official response could be obtained from senior police officials.
