Traffic movement at Khandagiri on the ever-busy National Highway 16 in Bhubaneswar on Saturday was disrupted for some time after the corporator of Ward No 63 and her husband, who is a BJP leader, staged a roadblock opposing opera troupes staging double shows at the ongoing Khandagiri Mela.

According to sources, Sujata Chhotray, the corporator of Ward No 63, and her husband, Himanshu Chhotray, who is the BJP district secretary, questioned the move to hold double shows at the Khandagiri Mela when the Matric examination is underway.
Protesting against the move, the couple staged a roadblock at Khandagiri on National Highway 16 disrupting traffic movement on both sides.

On being informed, police officials reached the spot and could persuade the couple to call off their protest, and the traffic movement was normalised.

“In my ward, children are appearing for Matric as well as Plus II examinations. Due to double shows of opera troupes, they are getting disturbed. We are not opposing the opera shows at Khandagiri Mela. But there shouldn’t be double shows during exam time. What is important-students’ future or entertainment?” said Sujata.

No reactions were received from the police or the BMC.
