Dhenkanal's world-famous Joranda Mela

To mark the day of salvation of Mahima Gosain, founder of Mahima Dharma, Joranda Mela is observed annually by Mahima sect followers in Odisha’s Dhenkanal. The annual spiritual fair is an integral part of Odisha’s cultural and religious fabric.

Lakhs of Mahima sadhus and devotees from West Bengal, Assam, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand and Odisha gather at Dhenkanal’s Shunya Mandir to pay homage to Mahima Swami.

The mela is observed every year on the full moon day of Magha (January-February), embodying Odisha’s enduring spiritual heritage and the philosophy of Sunya Brahma, the formless Supreme Being.

Rituals and Meaning

One of the main rituals of Joranda Mela is the lighting of the ‘Jhada Deepa’, a sacred fire lit with ghee, symbolizing purity and devotion.

Devotees do mass chanting of ‘Alekh Brahma’ and offer prayers at Sunya Mandir, Gadi Mandir and Dhuni Mandir, creating an atmosphere of divine energy.

Philosophy of Mahima Dharma

Established by Mahima Swami in the 19th century, Mahima Dharma is deeply rooted in Odisha’s spiritual heritage. It follows the principles of Advaita Vedanta, rejecting idol worship and caste-based discrimination.

This movement gained popularity as it provided an unrestricted alternative to traditional Hindu practices, focusing on truth, non-violence and simplicity.

Historical and Cultural Significance

Joranda Mela was started in 1876 after the death of Mahima Swami. The festival not only commemorates his teachings but also showcases Odisha’s tradition of spiritual reform movements. Mahima sect, a rare anti-caste monotheistic movement, challenged the orthodoxy of Hinduism and advocated equality, making it one of the most socially progressive faiths to emerge from Odisha.

The poetry of Bhima Bhoi, a disciple of Mahima Swami, further spread the movement’s ideals and is a part of Odisha's literary and philosophical heritage.
