Farmers showing their crops destroyed in storm
Farmers in Bisoi block in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district are facing severe distress after an intense Kalbaisakhi (Nor’wester) storm and hailstorm wreaked havoc, destroying vast acres of crops recently. The worst-hit area is Khadambeda village, where multiple acres of farmland have been severely affected, leaving farmers helpless.
According to local reports, the unseasonal storm and hailstones have damaged large portions of paddy fields while vegetables such as brinjal, cabbage, tomatoes, and other green produce have also got ruined.
In over 15 villages across Bisoi block, farmers have reportedly incurred heavy losses, with their standing crops either crushed under the weight of hailstones or uprooted by strong winds.
The impact of the storm was not limited to crops alone. Several houses in Khadambeda and nearby villages have suffered damage, with roofs being blown away and walls collapsing under the force of the storm. Many villagers are now left with no proper shelter, adding to their hardships.

Eyewitnesses say that the remnants of the destroyed crops are now being eaten by stray animals such as goats and sheep, highlighting the extent of the destruction. Farmers who depend entirely on agriculture for their livelihood are now in a state of panic, fearing severe financial loss and food insecurity in the coming months.
Many affected farmers have appealed to the local administration for immediate compensation and assistance to recover from the disaster. They urge the Odisha government to conduct a damage assessment survey and provide financial relief to help them rebuild their livelihoods.
The unexpected calamity has once again raised concerns about climate change and unpredictable weather patterns, which have been increasingly impacting traditional farming.
