Cyclonic circulation, western disturbance bring rainfall and dense fog to Odisha

PUBLISHED: LAST UPDATE:

Cuttack, Bhubaneswar experience light rain; fog in Khordha and Puri. Cyclonic circulation affects Odisha weather, predicts IMD.

Rain and dense fog in the twin cities of Odisha

The twin cities of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar, along with several districts of Odisha, woke up to weather marked by fog and rain. Light to moderate intermittent rainfall was reported in the twin cities whereas several locations in Khordha, Cuttack, Dhenkanal, Puri, and Jajpur reported foggy conditions and overcast skies.

Meanwhile, the Regional Meteorological Department has predicted light to moderate rainfall in 11 districts for the day. It also attributed this weather pattern to weather disturbance and a cyclonic circulation over the Indian Ocean, adjoining the Bay of Bengal.

Senior meteorologist Sarat Sahu explained that the movement of the western disturbance cloud mass along the Odisha coast is giving way to light rainfall across several places of the state.

While foggy conditions usually prevail in the early morning and late evenings in winter, the current cloud movement over low heights is causing drizzle and dense fog.

Sahu also added that the current weather system may not cause any significant rise in temperatures.

“Light rainfall may continue at several districts of the state but the mercury level is unlikely to rise. At best, a 0.5 to 1 degree Celsius drop may be recorded. The wind circulation over the Bay of Bengal is the reason behind it,” he said.

As per a forecast recently released by the IMD, the cyclonic system is likely to move west-north-westwards and reach over the southwest Bay of Bengal off Sri-Lanka – Tamil Nadu coasts around December 12, bringing overcast skies and foggy weather to coastal Odisha.
