Nandankanan Zoo
In view of the probable cyclonic storm Dana, the Nandankanan Zoo in Bhubaneswar has come up with a special action plan to deal with any emergency situation.
The plan highlights special measures to be undertaken before and after the cyclone.
A control room will be set up and it will be manned round the clock by ACFs.
The zoo will be closed for visitors, if required.
A mock drill will be conducted for all staff before deployment inside the zoo.
All staff have been asked not to take leave during the emergency period.
Non-perishable animal feed shall be kept stocked for 2 to 3 days if necessary.
All necessary medicines/ equipment shall be kept ready in the zoo hospital to meet any eventuality during cyclone and its aftermath.
Dry, dangerous and dead trees near and inside enclosures, particularly for large cats, need to be trimmed.
Wooden boxes will be installed bird enclosures for their shelter.
A mobile patrolling team will be formed to conduct boundary inspection to detect any kind of intrusion of animals and persons.
As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the well-marked low-pressure area over the east-central Bay of Bengal has intensified into a depression. Positioned near latitude 15.4°N and longitude 91.2°E, it is set to become a cyclonic storm by 23 October 2024 and further intensify into a severe cyclonic storm by 24 October.
Thereafter, it is likely to cross north Odisha and West Bengal coasts between Puri and Sagar Island during 24th October night and 25th October morning as a severe Cyclonic Storm with a wind speed of 100-110 kmph, gusting 120 kmph.
