Cuttack gang-rape case: Police nab another accused from Visakhapatnam

Commissionerate Police arrested Badal Sahu from Visakhapatnam in the Cuttack gang-rape case, marking seven total arrests. The crime highlighted women's safety issues.

The Commisionerate Police on Monday nabbed another person in connection with the November gang-rape case of a college student in Cuttack.

The accused, identified as Badal Sahu, was apprehended by the police team from Visakhapatnam. However, he was reported to be a resident of Nayagarh, in Khurda district of Odisha. With this development, the total number of arrests in the sensational case reached seven.

On November 8, police had arrested six persons for allegedly gang-raping a college student repeatedly for several days in Cuttack. However, the survivor's family had alleged that one more accused was absconding.

As per reports, the survivor’s boyfriend had filmed intimate acts at a cafe situated in the Purighat police limits of Cuttack with the aid of the cafe owner. Later, she was called to a house in Baranga and was gang-raped by her accused lover and his friends.

The accused boyfriend then blackmailed the survivor with the video and subsequently raped her repeatedly before she approached police.

Acting on the complaint, authorities raided the cafe and seized a mobile phone. Within two days, six of the accused were arrested and produced before the court. However, one of them was absconding after the incident.

The heinous crime had sent shock waves across the state and brought to light rising incidents of crime against women in the twin city of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar.

Notably, just a few days after this incident, an eight-year-old girl was brutally raped in Trisulia area under Baranga police limits in Cuttack district.
