Cuttack Choudwar reports multiple diarrhoea cases amid cholera outbreak in Odisha

The diarrhoea and suspected cholera outbreak that has gripped Jajpur district is now spreading to Cuttack, with the first cluster of cases emerging from the Tangi-Choudwar block. Sources reported that at least 15 residents of Sundari village in Safa panchayat have been infected with symptoms of acute diarrhoeal disease so far.

Reports also added that several of those infected are currently undergoing treatment at SCB Medical College in Cuttack and nearby private hospitals.

In response, a high-level team, including the in-charge of Tangi Community Health Centre, Block Medical Officer, Additional BDO, and RWSS engineers, visited the affected village over the weekend.

The team conducted a survey of drinking water sources, which were suspected to be contaminated. As a precaution, the administration has begun supplying potable water via tankers and has launched public awareness campaigns to curb further spread.

Health officials said active monitoring is underway, and preventive steps are being taken to ensure the disease does not spread to other areas of the district.

Outbreak Reaches Bhadrak as 60 Fall Ill in 2 Days

Simultaneously, the outbreak is spreading to Bhadrak district. After early cases were reported from Bhandaripokhari, the Dhamnagar area has now recorded 60 infections in just 48 hours. All patients are being treated at the Dhamnagar Community Health Centre.

Residents from Bhagabanpur and Khadipada were among those affected, with 25 people undergoing treatment, 15 of whom have since recovered. Several remain under observation. Bhadrak health officials have been alerted, and independent containment measures are in motion.

State Alert After Jajpur Toll Rises to Seven

These developments follow the ongoing health emergency in Jajpur district, where more than 1,500 people have fallen ill and seven have died due to the outbreak. The State government has declared a health alert across affected regions, as the infection spreads through contaminated water supplies during the monsoon.

Outbreak Expands to Dhenkanal and Keonjhar

Apart from Cuttack and Bhadrak, similar cases have been reported from Dhenkanal and Keonjhar. In Dhenkanal’s Bhuban block, around 50 residents are under treatment for diarrhoeal symptoms, while Anandapur in Keonjhar is also witnessing a steady rise in infections.
