A couple from Baniatangi village under Sadar Police limits in Khordha district allegedly died by suicide on Sunday.

The deceased have been identified as Samarendra Senapati and his wife Sunita Senapati.

According to sources, upon returning from his farmland, Samarendra had a quarrel with his wife over some issues. Later, he went into a room and bolted the door from the inside. The family members knocked on the door but there was no response from the inside. With no option left, they broke open the door only to find Samarendra hanging.

While the family members were taking Samarendra to a nearby hospital, they got the news of Sunita’s death due to electrocution. It has been alleged that she also committed suicide. Later, both husband and wife were rushed to the hospital where the doctors declared them received dead.

On being informed, a team from Sadar Police Station reached the hospital and sent the bodies for post-mortem.

The deceased couple is survived by two daughters and one son.

“After returning from his agricultural land, the husband and wife had a quarrel over some reasons. Then he went into his room and committed suicide with the help of a saree,” said Kedareswara Prusty, local sarpanch.

The police have launched a detailed probe to ascertain the reason behind the duo taking such an extreme step.
