Digha Jagannath temple
The newly consecrated Jagannath Temple in Digha, West Bengal, termed 'Jagannath Dham' by the state government, has triggered controversy and become a subject of debate.
A contingent of servitors from Puri Srimandir was reportedly invited on the occasion of the temple's ceremonial inauguration, igniting discussions about propriety. Key concerns surround the introduction of 'Brahma Sthapana' into the stone idols — a deviation from established ritualistic norms, according to senior Daitapati servitor Ramachandra Das Mahapatra.
Participation Row
The Jagannath temple in Digha spans over a 20-acre property, costing Rs 250 crore in total, with architectural inspiration drawn from the iconic Srimandir in Puri. Despite notices issued by Puri Srimandir's Suara and Puspalaka Nijogas, some servitors chose to participate, including Daitapati Nijoga secretary Ramakrushna Das Mahapatra, in the inauguration ceremony of the Jagannath Temple in Digha.
Discontent Servitors
As per reports, some senior servitors of Puri Srimandir are vocal about their discontent with this participation, viewing it as a personal decision that did not resonate with broader community sentiments. Additional criticisms have been levied by other servitors concerning the execution of the event, calling for respectful adherence to traditional protocols and practices.
What Daitapati Servitor Says...
"As per the legends, Lord Jagannath is 'Daru Bramha'. The idols of the Holy Trinity are made from wood. 'Brahma Sthapana' rituals are made into wooden idols during 'Anasara'. 'Brahma Sthapana' into the stone idols could not be carried out as per the rituals," said senior Daitapati servitor Ramachandra Das Mohapatra.

"They must have some nexus with ISKCON for business purposes. Some of our servitors have gone there for their own benefit. No Shastras in the 'Sanatana Dharma' advocate worship of Lord Jagannath in stone idols and 'Anna Bhoga'," he added.
