Snake Rescued From OUAT Hostel

Bhubaneswar witnessed a dramatic rescue operation at the Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT) after a cobra got trapped in a steel drain mesh at the Godabarish hostel. The incident, which took place late at night, caused panic among students, prompting an emergency call to the Snake Helpline for immediate assistance.

The Discovery and Panic:

The snake was first noticed by a student who had entered the washroom on Saturday night. To his horror, he saw the cobra’s head stuck inside the drain mesh, struggling to free itself. Terrified, he ran out screaming, alerting fellow hostel residents. Recognizing it as a venomous cobra, the students decided not to take any risks and immediately contacted Shubhendu Mallik, General Secretary of Snake Helpline, for professional intervention.

Rescue Operation:

Upon receiving the distress call, Snake Helpline member Arun Baral rushed to the scene. After assessing the situation, he realized that the snake could not be pulled out manually without causing it serious injury. The steel mesh was too strong and rigid, preventing any movement.

To safely extract the snake, Arun used a crowbar and started loosening the mesh. The 4-foot-long cobra had its head tightly stuck, making it extremely difficult to remove. After several attempts, he managed to transfer the snake into a rescue bag and took it for further treatment.

Final Release

Early the next morning, Shubhendu Mallik and Arun Baral attempted to cut the steel mesh using a metal cutter. However, due to its toughness, they had to resort to a chisel and hammer to carefully release the snake. After an intense effort, the steel mesh was cut, and the snake was freed.

The cobra had sustained minor injuries on the right side of its hood, possibly due to its struggle in the confined space. Appropriate treatment was provided to the wounds, ensuring proper care before the release of the snake.
