Indian Coast Guard launches ‘Operation Olivia’ to protect Odisha's Olive Ridley turtles
The Indian Coast Guard has inaugurated ‘Operation Olivia’, a comprehensive initiative aimed at safeguarding the vulnerable olive ridley turtles during their crucial nesting period, in Odisha’s Paradip. The initiative aims at constant monitoring of the waters using drones, Coast Guard vessels, and Dornier aircraft, to prevent any alien intruders into the riverbeds where the turtles are laying their eggs.
The operation deploys fast patrol vessels, Dornier aircraft, and interceptor crafts for round-the-clock surveillance. The operation also enforces bans on illegal trawling under the Orissa Marine Fisheries Act.

Extensive Patrolling & Preserving Marine Life
In a determined effort over the past the past 138 days, 29 Coast Guard vessels and Dornier aircraft have been actively involved. They are actively patrolling for approximately 65 hours through aerial surveillance. They are also examining fishing boats. In an operation of this magnitude, ensuring the safety and protection of these endangered species is imperative.
Enforcing Compliance & Installation of TED
The installation of 'Turtle Excluder Devices' (TED) in netting has been a focus. The Turtle Excluder Devices (TEDs) are to be mandatorily installed on fishing boats to prevent turtle deaths. With this, several Olive Ridley turtles are being successfully rescued from entanglement in drift nets.
Collaborative Efforts By the Fisheries & Forest Department
The project is a collaborative endeavour involving the State Fisheries and Forest Departments. There is a concerted focus on educating the local fishing communities while strengthening patrols around restricted fishing zones, intensifying the scrutiny of mechanised boats.
