Chinese manja thread for kite flying: Commissionerate Police warns strict action

Ahead of Makar Sankranti, the Commissionerate Police has issued a stern warning regarding the use of Chinese manja, a glass-coated string commonly used for kite flying. Amarendra Panda, the Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP) on Monday announced that stringent actions will be taken against those engaging in the sale or use of this dangerous material.

Following this advisory, police stations across Cuttack have been instructed to launch a special drive and crack down on shops engaged in the selling of the banned manja threads. Several raids have already been conducted in various parts of the city as part of the ongoing efforts to curb its usage.

In the past 10 days, numerous accidents involving Chinese manja have been reported in Cuttack, with motorcyclists frequently bearing the brunt.

In a recent incident, a motorcyclist on the Cuttack Link Road had a narrow escape after the deadly string got entangled in his neck near the busy junction.

The use of this broken glass-coated string, which poses significant risks to both public safety and the environment, continues to remain a major concern.
