Chhatra Congress members stage protest in Bhubaneswar

Odisha Chhatra Congress on Wednesday hit the streets in Bhubaneswar demanding the removal of garbage from the Temporary Transit Centre (TTC) near Sainik School.

As the dumping yard has not been shifted yet despite several protests, members of the Odisha Chhatra Congress took out a rally and staged a road blockade near Sainik School. They shouted slogans against the government to fulfil their demand.

Following the development, police intervened and cleared the road blockade. Subsequently, the protestors staged a sit-in near the dumping yard.

“When there was a BJD government, BJP workers had held protests for the shifting of the garbage dump. Local people are facing several problems and getting affected with many diseases due to the garbage dump. Now, BJP government has come to power. However, even five months after their tenure, nothing has been done to shift the garbage dump,” said a protesting Chhatra Congress leader.

“We are forced to stage the protest. We will lock up the gate and continue our protest till our demands are met. People in the nearby areas are suffering a lot due to the garbage dump,” he added.

“When BJD was in power, BJP was demanding shifting of the garbage dump. However, they have done nothing after coming to power. We will intensify our strike if it is not shifted,” said another Chhatra Congress leader.

It is pertinent to mention here that the foul stench emanating from the Temporary Transit Centre (TTC) behind Sainik School has severely affected the normal life of people in the nearby localities. It has become difficult for residents to go about their routine chores without covering their faces with handkerchiefs.
