‘Cash for darshan’ continues unchecked at Puri Jagannath Temple; devotees capture evidence on camera

PUBLISHED: LAST UPDATE:

Allegations of cash collection by staff at Puri Jagannath Temple's Singhadwar prompt an inquiry ordered by Chief Administrator Dibyajyoti Parida, with viral videos as evidence.

In a serious breach of temple protocols, allegations have resurfaced at the Jagannath Temple in Puri of staff insisting on monetary collection from devotees under the pretext of facilitating darshan.

The allegations received credibility when videos circulating on social media showed temple staff and volunteers reportedly accepting cash from devotees at the entrance of the Singhadwar, raising concerns over malpractice despite police presence at the site.

The controversy comes days after a similar incident, where a volunteer was allegedly caught collecting money from a devotee. Following that episode, the temple administration had expelled the individual involved.

Temple Administration Responds

In the latest incident, viral footage prompted the temple’s Chief Administrator to order an immediate inquiry into the allegations.

Dibyajyoti Parida, District Magistrate of Puri, confirmed that a formal investigation has been directed to ascertain the veracity of the claims.

“Whenever such a case has come to light, we have always initiated strict action. To avoid such incidents, all concerned have been briefed. Strong and decisive action will be taken to prevent any recurrence,” he said, adding that the temple authorities are committed to ensuring transparent management and safeguarding devotees’ interests.

The Singhadwar, being one of the main entrances to the Jagannath Temple sanctum, is a high-traffic area where devotees often seek assistance from volunteers or guides. While the temple administration has strict protocols for darshan arrangements, lapses in enforcement have reportedly led to the exploitation of visitors on occasions.

Meanwhile, Parida has assured that the current probe will examine the recent viral video, cross-check claims made by devotees, and evaluate adherence to temple regulations. Authorities have assured that any personnel found violating rules will face strict disciplinary action.
