Carbon Monoxide gas leak at Rourkela Steel Plant, 8 workers critical

At least eight workers are in critical condition following a carbon monoxide gas leak at Rourkela Steel Plant. The incident occurred during repair work at blast furnace number-5. Injured workers are receiving treatment in ICU at Ispat General Hospital.

Gas Leak At Rourkela Steel Plant

At least eight workers were injured following a gas leak incident reported at Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) on Monday. As per initial reports, three workers and five contract labourers fell sick following leakage of carbon monoxide gas.

The incident occurred when they had gone to conduct some repair work at blast furnace number- 5 today. Following the incident, the eight injured were rushed to Ispat General Hospital (IGH). They are now in ICU and undergoing treatment.

As per the hospital authorities, all of them have been kept under observation for 24 hours. Earlier also similar mishaps was reported at Rourkela Steel Plant. Five labourers had also died in the mishap. The RSP authorities had then given prominence to safety. However, it seems that a complete check on such mishaps has not been possible so far, rued locals.

Several unions have also blamed the authorities for allegedly not taking appropriate steps and neglecting the safety aspect of the workers. No comment could be obtained from the RSP authorities.
