Canal water floods homes at midnight in Bhadrak, 30 families affected

In an unfortunate turn of events, canal water entered homes in the middle of the night in Odisha’s Bhadrak district, leaving nearly 30 families stranded and battling waist-deep water due to severe waterlogging. The incident occurred in the wee hours on Friday in Ward 9 of Rahanj Panchayat near Ranitall Bazaar under Bhadrak block.

What Happened and How Residents Responded

Residents were jolted awake as water from a nearby canal suddenly surged into their homes, submerging floors and damaging property. Panic-stricken families scrambled to save their lives and belongings in the darkness. Many managed to escape with just the clothes on their backs as the water level continued to rise.

Two families suffered majorly after their mud houses partially collapsed under the pressure of the gushing water. The walls of homes belonging to Ramesh Pradhan and Rajendra Bihari were reported to have caved in, leaving them homeless.

Lack of Preparedness Raises Concerns

Locals allege that despite previous complaints about weak embankments and poor drainage in the area, no preventive measures were taken by the authorities. The sudden release of water from the canal, without prior warning, has raised serious questions about administrative negligence.

Urgent Need for Relief and Rehabilitation

As villagers struggle with waterlogging and property damage, they have appealed for immediate relief, including food, clean drinking water, and temporary shelters.
