In a bizarre incident, the body of a person who died in an accident was reportedly disinterred from the grave for an insurance claim. The incident was reported from Purunapani village in the Sukinda area of Jajpur district on Sunday.

As per reports, Prahllad Nayak, a resident of Purunapani died in an accident on December 7. Police were clueless about the death. The family members of the deceased brought the body from the hospital and later buried it. The post-mortem of the body was not conducted.

When Gita Nayak, the wife of the deceased, came to know that the post-mortem report of the accident victim was necessary to claim for insurance and other benefits, she intimated the matter to the police. Police exhumed the body from the grave in the presence of Sukinda tehsildar Damayanti Sahu.

As for the incident, tehsildar Damayanti Sahu said that an unnatural death was reported from Purnapani village. “The family members brought the body from Sukinda hospital without following procedures and interred it. There was no information given to the police about the case. Later the woman complained that her husband died after being hit by an unidentified vehicle,” she said.

“Based on her complaint, the body was dug up from the grave and taken for post-mortem,” she added.
