In good news for the wildlife lovers, the Blackbuck population in Odisha’s Ganjam has increased by almost 200, revealed the latest census.

As per reports, the blackbuck population has risen to 1979 this year from 1773 in 2021. Out of the total, 331 are male, 1366 are female and 282 are calves.

Aska Ranger, Pramod Kumar Panda said, “A training camp was held prior to the actual census work. Wildlife experts have come here to train our personnel and other volunteers who took part in it.”

“Following the training, counting was held. And the reports are encouraging. As far as the blackbuck numbers in Aska Range is concerned, it has recorded a rise of 200 blackbucks this census,” informed the Ranger.

Not only in Aska, but blackbuck census was held also in Polasara and Buguda ranges in the district. The reports from there are encouraging too.

The blackbuck census is held once in every two years. The last census was held in 2021.

In fact, the blackbuck numbers have been witnessing a steady rise over the years.

The Forest department had also decided to relocate blackbucks from Ganjam to Puri-Konark Balukhand Sanctuary and Chandaka Wildlife Sanctuary.
