BJD tries to overcome internal rifts as Foundation Day gets closer

PUBLISHED: LAST UPDATE:

BJD, led by Naveen Patnaik, faces internal discord post-2024 General Elections. As its foundation day on December 26 nears, the party aims to mend divides and strengthen unity amidst BJP's critique. Main issue confronting BJD is how active the party supremo will remain in the days ahead, political analysts opine.

Opposition Biju Janata Dal (BJD) finds itself at a crossroads as it navigates internal discord after its debacle in the 2024 General Elections. The party, led by Naveen Patnaik, had been in power for 24 years and it now prepares to mark its Foundation Day on December 26.

This celebration is seen as a significant step in an apparent attempt to mend factional divides and invigorate party unity.

In the wake of electoral setbacks, the party is challenged by factionalism within its ranks, casting doubts on its internal cohesion. Naveen Patnaik has prioritised strengthening the party's internal dynamics, even delaying his district tours which were earlier scheduled for November to concentrate on rallying support from within.

As the BJD approaches its foundation day, its leadership plans to reinforce its achievements in governance while critiquing the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)’s tenure. However, the BJP asserted that these celebrations are unlikely to disguise the BJD’s internal divisions, foreseeing potential disintegration due to the stagnation in leadership and policy initiatives.

Despite these hurdles, Naveen Patnaik aims to instil a renewed sense of purpose and strategic direction within the BJD. The party has outlined a programme to engage with the populace more intensely, with plans to stage a state-wide protest on January 6 against inflation, which serves as both a pressure point and a galvanising opportunity on the back of their foundation day event.

As the 28th Foundation Day draws near, the BJD’s capacity to present a united front will be crucial in countering the BJP’s increasing political engagement across the State.

“The main issue confronting BJD is how active the party supremo will remain in the days ahead. As the Opposition, the party has to keep its objectives clear and act accordingly and intensify its fight against the BJP. If the party succeeds in doing so, then only they will have a fair chance to perform well in upcoming panchayat polls,” political analyst Sandip Mishra opined.
