Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation to publish holding tax defaulters’ list quarterly

Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation will publish its tax defaulters' list quarterly, aiming to ease taxpayers' financial pressure. Mayor Sulochana Das noted Rs 101 crore in holding taxes was collected. The civic body gathered a total of Rs 230 crore from various other sources.

The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to publish its list of tax defaulters every three months, updating the system from the previous six-month interval, the BMC sources said on Thursday.

According to the sources, this adjustment is aimed at alleviating the financial pressure on significant taxpayer constituents, who often struggled with the deadlines that led to an accumulation of unpaid dues by financial year-end.

By shortening the period between the publication of these lists, taxpayers will have enhanced opportunities to address their dues more proactively, potentially easing their financial load.

Fiscal performance of BMC in FY 2024-25

Reporting on the fiscal performance for the year 2024-25, BMC Mayor Sulochana Das highlighted that substantial revenue of Rs 101 crore was collected through holding taxes.

Furthermore, the civic body gathered a total of Rs 230 crore from various other sources, including parking fees, trade licenses, and advertisements.

“We have had a major success in holding tax collection reaching Rs 101 crore. I would thank the residents of Bhubaneswar for this notable collection of revenues. Holding tax collection in the previous year was Rs 87 crore,” the BMC Mayor expressed.

“We have plans to bring out the defaulter list every three months. This will help lessen the financial burden on taxpayers. I am hopeful that BMC will generate a record amount of revenue in the current financial year,” the BMC Mayor further said.
