A team of researchers at the Institute of Life Sciences (ILS) in Bhubaneswar has made a groundbreaking discovery by identifying a novel host protein named NCoR1 (Nuclear Receptor Co-repressor 1) to combat severe ailments such as Tuberculosis and viral infections and addressing prolonged health complications associated with Autoimmune diseases.
The findings of the research revealed that a person gets infected with diseases like Tuberculosis if the protein NCoR1 reduces in the body. An increased amount of this NCoR1 protein helps combat the disease.
The research was undertaken under the guidance of Doctor Sunil Kumar Raghav. The scientists have successfully tested this experiment on a mouse. This remarkable discovery has also been published in the international book PLOS Biology.
The team is actively engaged in ongoing investigations to unravel the full spectrum of its functionality in human subjects.
Prior research conducted by the group has also shed light on its pivotal role in strengthening antiviral responses.
Presently, the scientists are focusing on extending their exploration toward new dimensions linked to Rheumatoid Arthritis and Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).
“This protein mostly helps to combat Autoimmune disease and Tuberculosis. We are yet to confirm on which disease it will potentially work properly. We have found through our experiment that this protein helps reduce Tuberculosis infection. We are the first to discover that this protein has a link with Tuberculosis,” said scientist Sunil Kumar Raghav.
