Shocking! Bear tied, beaten up in Odisha's Malkangiri, probe launched after video goes viral

A disturbing video has recently emerged from the border region of Malkangiri district, revealing a harrowing incident of extreme animal cruelty involving a bear.

In the distressing footage, the bear is shown tied to an iron wire, being viciously beaten, with blood visible around its muzzle as it cries out in pain. Shockingly, onlookers can be seen applauding and laughing at the bear's distress.

The video, recorded on a mobile phone, has rapidly circulated on various social media platforms, causing widespread alarm across the nation. 

In response, the Sukma Forest Department has offered a reward of Rs 10,000 for information leading to the apprehension of those responsible for this heinous act.

This incident highlights the urgent need to address wildlife cruelty, which is a punishable offence.

The Forest Department has promised stringent action against the offenders. The department has started an investigation into the incident. Based on the viral video, the department is trying to trace the persons involved in the heinous act.

The exact area in which the act of severe animal cruelty occurred and the persons involved in it are yet to be identified. However, the Forest Department is confident to identify the remote area and the persons till  Sunday evening.

Several cases of cruelty to animals have come to light recently, and they have provokeed outrage on social media.

Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act

Protection of animals is enshrined as a fundamental duty in the Indian Constitution and there exist several animal welfare legislations in India such as the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1960 and the Wildlife Protection Act 1972.

Section 428 and 429 of the IPC provides for punishment of all acts of cruelty such as killing, poisoning, maiming or rendering useless of animals.
