Ancient Barahanath temple in Jajpur battles preservation challenges
The Barahanath temple, a site of historical and mythological importance in Jajpur, is reportedly in urgent need of maintenance and preservation.
Situated along the picturesque banks of the Baitarani river, the temple is under the maintenance of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). However, concerns have emerged regarding its neglect.
Dedicated to Lord Barahanath, the temple is a revered site where the deities Yajna Varaha, Shweta Varaha, Lakshmi, and Jagannath are enshrined. Despite this, the temple heavily relies on external support for fundamental ritualistic practices.
As per reports, the site suffers from poor infrastructure, lacking even basic amenities such as toilets and drinking water. During the monsoon, the temple precinct becomes waterlogged. The condition of the associated pond is reportedly in a dire state, further deterring visitors. Consequently, the number of worshippers has dwindled.
Located only 200 metres away from Jajpur district headquarters, the temple complex also includes smaller temples dedicated to Haragauri, the Sun God, and the Navagraha. Despite its prominent mythological heritage, these sites remain underdeveloped.
Servitors and devotees have raised issues about insufficient development work, highlighting the pressing need for financial resources to sustain daily rituals.
“Barahanath temple in Jajpur is the most neglected temple. Even most of the people in Jajpur don’t know about the ancient temple. The government is not paying any attention towards the maintenance of the temple and as a result the daily rituals of the temple are not even conducted properly,” rued Kalandi Badu, the servitor of the temple.
“Though ASI has taken up the temple for maintenance work, it’s an unfortunate matter that cracks have developed in some portion of the temple. The day to day maintenances of the temple is also not being done properly. There should be a special budget provision for the temple,” said Bibhuti Mohapatra, a devotee.

In response to these challenges, the Additional Collector has announced that there are ongoing discussions between the ASI and the local Tehsil administration to address these issues promptly.
“Jajpur Tehsildar is the trusty of the temple. I will discuss with him to hold a meeting with the servitors and the trustee members. All the issues will be solved soon,” said Subhendra Samal, Additional Collector of Jajpur.
