Trains start operations from BBSN
Bhubaneswar New Railway Station (BBSN) has begun hosting major express and MEMU services as part of Indian Railways’ efforts to decongest the main Bhubaneswar station and promote regional growth.
Effective from May 11 and 12, 2024, the East Coast Railway (ECoR) has rerouted three major express trains to originate and terminate at BBSN, alongside assigning regular halts to several MEMU and passenger trains.
This shift is expected to benefit commuters from northern Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Barang, and nearby areas, while also boosting the station’s status under the Amrit Bharat Station redevelopment plan.
These trains stop at Bhubaneswar New Railway Station for one minute. Most are unreserved MEMU services that run daily, enhancing local connectivity across Odisha.

The relocation of key express services to BBSN is part of Indian Railways’ larger strategy to ease congestion at Bhubaneswar’s main station, which serves over one lakh passengers daily. BBSN, equipped with seven platforms, was previously underutilised due to poor access and fewer stoppages.
Under the Rs 250 crore Amrit Bharat development plan, the station is undergoing massive upgrades. A 100-foot-wide approach road is being planned from Nandankanan Road, while another road from Raghunathpur is under review.
The state has also cleared commercial expansion proposals for malls, offices, and business centres near the station, with 10 lakh sq ft of space under development, half reserved for commerce.

Currently, BBSN handles approximately 18,000 passengers daily. With improved connectivity and future plans including foot-over bridges, lighting, and extended facilities, this number is expected to grow significantly, turning Bhubaneswar New into a major urban transit hub.
