Police force deployed at Puri Jagannath Temple
Amid heightened national security measures in the wake of Operation Sindoor 2.0, India is sending a strong and uncompromising message to Pakistan. While defence operations are being intensified at the national level, on the home front, Odisha’s revered Jagannath Temple in Puri has come under a special security focus.
In an unprecedented move, a dedicated independent police force has been deployed exclusively for the security of the Puri Srimandir, reflecting the growing concern over safeguarding key religious and cultural landmarks.
Over 150 police personnel have been deployed in and around the temple premises, forming a separate unit responsible for its round-the-clock protection. These security forces have undergone specialized training tailored to handle sensitive religious environments and to respond swiftly to potential threats. A special security briefing session was organized earlier today to reinforce operational coordination and outline strategic responsibilities.
Authorities have confirmed that night-long security operations are now in place, including intensified vehicle checks, road blockades, and identity verification of suspicious individuals. Checkpoints have been set up at multiple locations across Puri, especially in and around the Srimandir corridor, and all incoming and outgoing vehicles are being thoroughly examined.
In addition to street-level surveillance, surprise inspections are being carried out across various hotels and lodges throughout the city. Police officials are verifying the identity documents of guests staying in these establishments to prevent any infiltration by anti-social elements or potential threats. Hotel owners have been directed to maintain detailed guest records and cooperate fully with security personnel.
Sources suggest that the deployment of a dedicated police unit to Srimandir is a part of a broader strategy under Operation Sindoor 2.0 to secure key public and religious institutions across India. While the operation is primarily aimed at countering external threats and cross-border aggression, it also underscores internal security preparedness.
Police officials have stated that these security measures are not temporary but part of a sustained effort to ensure the safety of devotees and tourists visiting Puri. The move has been largely welcomed by the public, who see it as a necessary step to maintain peace and order in one of the country’s most significant pilgrimage centres. Earlier, NSG team had visited Jagannath temple in Puri and had reviewed security arrangements here.
As India remains vigilant on both external and internal fronts, the deployment in Puri marks a clear indication that national security and cultural heritage protection are being treated with utmost seriousness.
