79th Independence Day Puri beach sand art by Sudarsan Pattnaik
Internationally acclaimed sand artist and Padma Shri awardee Sudarsan Pattnaik crafted a large-scale sand sculpture on Puri beach depicting Operation Sindoor to mark the 79th Independence Day.
The installation, made from nearly six tonnes of sand, showcases the bravery and valour of the Indian Armed Forces. It features a map of India with a symbolic depiction of Operation Sindoor, alongside scenes of aerial strikes and ground action against enemy positions. The art aims to be a visual tribute to military courage and national security.
The sand sculpture integrates the national map with the Sindoor motif, representing honour and sacrifice. Military aircraft and combat action are carved in detail, evoking the intensity of a high-stakes operation. The “Operation Sindoor” theme symbolises the armed forces’ readiness to defend the nation against any threat.
Pattnaik, renowned for using his art to promote national pride and global causes, has previously created sand installations for events such as Republic Day, Kargil Vijay Diwas, and campaigns for peace.
Positioned against the backdrop of the Bay of Bengal, the sculpture will remain on display over the Independence Day weekend, offering a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made to preserve India’s sovereignty.
Speaking about the creation, Pattnaik said the sand art was designed both as a greeting to the nation and as a salute to soldiers who safeguard its freedom.
"A symbolic sindoor is placed prominently in the artwork, and it shows the country defending itself. Students of my art school helped me in creating this installation, which used 6 tonnes of sand,” said Sudarsan Pattnaik.
The work was completed as part of the Independence Day celebrations, which have seen extensive preparations across the country. On Puri beach, the artwork has drawn large numbers of visitors, many stopping to photograph and share images of the patriotic display.
