In a tragic road mishap, four persons were killed and several others sustained grievous injuries as a pick-up van in which they were travelling turned turtle on Chiting Ghati under Mohana Police limits of Gajapati district, on Wednesday.

According to sources, the group was travelling to Ghaibali near Chandiput to participate in the Dasah (10th-day death rituals). However, their journey took a tragic turn when the pick-up van driver lost control of the ill-fated vehicle.

The pick-up van carrying around 40 passengers from Kekesing village in Ramagiri veered off while negotiating a turn, resulting in the mishap, an eyewitness expressed.

Tragically, two victims died from their injuries at Chandragiri health centre, while another two were pronounced dead at MKCG Hospital in Berhampur.

More than 30 sustained injuries, with 16 receiving necessary medical care at the MKCG hospital and others being treated at Chandragiri, a police official said.

On being informed, Mohana police reached the spot and rescued the injured persons. Police sent them to hospital for treatment and have launched a probe.
