Tension prevailed at Sunhat Kanseimahola area in Balasore after around 30 persons were allegedly bitten by a mad dog on Saturday. Following the incident, irate locals reportedly beat the dog to death.
One of the injured Rahmat Khan said, “The dog attacked my nephew while he was going for a morning walk and later attacked son of my younger brother. When I tried to kill the dog apprehending that it may attack others, it attacked me.”
According to Khan, he had called up the municipality chairman who informed that they had no mechanism to catch or kill the mad dog.
Another injured said, “We were unable to move out of our homes as the dog has turned violent and started attacking people in the locality.” Local residents on the other hand alleged that no step has reportedly been taken to control the cannie population which has led to such situation in the region.
“We suspected that the dog, which has been killed, is not the one which attacked so many people. We are in a state of fear now as such incidents can occur again. I was on going out when the dog attacked me from behind,” said an injured person.
Akshya Kumar Sethi, a doctor said, “In the morning, 20 to 25 persons had come to the hospital with category 3 dog bite cases. As per the provision, the injured were treated. Three to four persons had sustained grievous injuries.”
Sethi said 'as rabies is a fatal disease, we have treated the injured persons as per the existing protocols'.
