A tragic construction accident in Odisha’s Cuttack district claimed three lives on Saturday after a concrete bridge slab collapsed near Khannagar. Chief Minister Mohan Majhi has ordered an investigation and announced compensation for the families of the deceased.

Mishap during bridge construction work in Cuttack: 3 killed, 2 critical

A day after a tragic bridge construction accident in Cuttack claimed three lives and left two others critically injured, the district administration has launched an official inquiry into the incident. The probe is being carried out on the direction of Chief Minister Mohan Majhi, with the Sub-Collector, Executive Engineer, and Labour Officer inspecting the site and examining the circumstances that led to the fatal mishap near the Kathajodi River.

Bridge Falls During Construction

The incident occurred on Saturday evening near Khannagar, where a ready-made concrete slab, being lifted by a crane for the under-construction bridge, collapsed suddenly. The falling slab crushed five workers on site, including an engineer and two labourers. All five victims were rushed to SCB Medical College and Hospital. While two labourers were declared brought dead, the engineer also succumbed to his injuries during treatment. The condition of the two remaining injured persons remains critical.

Safety Concerns Emerge Amid Ongoing Infrastructure Project

The bridge construction is part of a larger infrastructure project that followed the inauguration of the new bus terminal at Khannagar. The tragic accident has raised serious safety concerns surrounding the execution of the project.

CM Announces Ex Gratia for Victims’ Families

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Majhi has announced an ex gratia of Rs 5 lakh each from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund for the families of the deceased. He also extended his condolences to the bereaved families.
